This year, the UI Youth Ballet and Community Dance School’s annual spring concert will bring favorite childhood stories to life with a new original production of Stone Soup, tales from Mother Goose, and more. Live piano featuring compositions by Edvard Greig and Maurice Ravel will accompany the dancers under the direction of our senior accompanist, Douglas Baker.
Participation
Enrollment is now open and will be open until auditions are held on February 8, 2025. Students who are currently enrolled in Creative Dance 3 – Level 2B can register. Visit the Enroll page to sign up. The fee to participate in both rehearsals and performances is $170.
Please note that Pre-Ballet students will only perform in two out of the three shows held:
Tuesday Pre-Ballet - May 16, 7:00PM and May 17, 2:00PM
Saturday Pre-Ballet - May 16, 7:00PM and May 17, 7:00PM
Volunteers
Family volunteers are crucial to the success of a safe and rewarding spring concert. To participate, a family member is required to assist with one of the various tasks detailed on the concert registration form. If one prefers the convenience of not volunteering, one may fund the hourly pay of a university student to work instead.
Required Dates
Auditions: February 8, 2025
Anyone with a conflict on this date who still wishes to sign up for the spring concert, please email our main office at dnc-communitydance@uiowa.edu.
Weekly Rehearsals: February 17-May 10, 2025
All rehearsals are separate from technique classes and are held immediately following class time. Keeping performance activities separate allows us to focus on providing the highest level of technical instruction during class time.
Full Cast (Creative Dance 3-Youth Ballet Ensemble) Rehearsals: May 3 & 10, 2025
These full cast rehearsals require all levels, Creative Dance 3-Youth Ballet Ensemble, to attend extra rehearsals outside of their weekly rehearsals. If you have a conflict with either of these dates but still wish to participate in the spring concert, please email the office at dnc-communitydance@uiowa.edu.
Daily Production Week Rehearsals at Space Place Theater: May 11-15, 2025
Performances: May 16, 2025 – 7:00pm; May 17, 2025 – 2:00pm and 7:00pm
Costumes
Costumes for the spring concert are provided by the program. The cost of costume use and cleaning are covered by concert enrollment fees and community contributions to the Production Fund. Dance undergarments, tights, and shoes are provided by performers’ families. Required color and style will be specified by concert staff.
Pre-Show Demonstration
Following the success of last year’s demonstration, Creative Movement 2 students will once again have the opportunity to dance in a class demonstration at the beginning of the 2:00PM performance on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
There will be no additional cost for this optional opportunity and students will practice during regularly scheduled class times. Families of enrolled students will receive further details following the start of the spring semester.
New This Year
Creative Dance 3 and 4 classes will make their debut and perform in the spring concert. Any students enrolled in both a Creative Dance and Ballet class may sign up to perform in both dances.
