As a higher education non-profit outreach program dedicated to community building between the University of Iowa and the Iowa City area, we strive to offer the best dance education for our students.

Class on Campus

Our connection with the Department of Dance gives our program a home in Halsey Hall. The dance building grants our school access to six fully equipped dance studios of varying sizes for our students to take class.

Our dedicated instructors make a difference for our students. Alongside instructors from the community, undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Dance teach and choreograph for our school while performing and working towards their university degree.

We take pride in offering live accompaniment. Students from the UI School of Music and professional accompanists enrich many of our classes with their presence playing live music.

Performance Opportunities

Our students perform multiple times a year both on and off campus, providing opportunities for them and local audience members alike.

The Department of Dance’s theater, Space Place Theater in North Hall, is a great place to learn to perform for an audience in a formal theater that still feels like home. The lighting systems are designed with dance in mind, which makes our students look great on stage.

Like the Department of Dance, rather than selling yearly costumes to students, we focus on building out the school’s collection. Repurposing garments reduces costs for everyone and is more environmentally sustainable.

Parent volunteers are able to participate in the Spring Concert. This opportunity builds community between parents, students, and staff.

A Place to Grow

Semester-length courses are a critical element of creating effective learning environments for our students and building community among participants.

While we share a home with the Department of Dance, the UI Youth Ballet and Community Dance School is a self-funded program. Revenue from semester-length courses sustains our operations. Consistent student enrollment during both the academic year and summer session is critical to our success.

We are always looking for new students to join our school. If you know anyone who might be interested in taking dance classes, please send them to our website or have them reach out to us by email.
